It’s been almost two months of MRT (Metabolic Resistance Training) training at RTG Training and Performance in Athens, PA. I am now down a total of 12 pounds as of Friday’s weight-in! I’d probably be down more, but the healthy eating part is a work-in-progress. I have an affinity for craft beers and fine wine! Much of what I work hard on during the week gets a little undone on weekends.
In any event, I enjoy this type of training. There are many reasons, but here are my favorite.
1. Variety
Every two weeks, the MRT coaches (Alex, Devin, Rob, Brian, Joel, and Tiff) change up the routines. This causes muscle confusion. Just when your muscles have started to adapt to a routine, they are hit from different angles with different stressors with new routines.
This also prevents boredom. New routines keep my mind alert. New stuff keeps me mentally fresh.
2. More Than Just Muscles
Besides muscle tone and cardio-vascular fitness, I can tell that my balance and agility has improved. I no longer struggle to stand up from kneeling down or squatting. I have found it easier to pop right up. Also, I have found that my balance on one-legged exercises has greatly improved.
Improved balance has helped in other areas, too. Things as simple as climbing stairs or sitting down in my car are far easier after two months of MRT.
3. Permanent Changes
Because I am losing weight slowly, I feel I am going to keep it off (not that I was a two-ton Tony). Previously, I had lost a substantial amount of weight (50 lbs.) in a relatively short period of time (2 months). However, I slowly crept back up over the past several years. Not back up to my all-time high of 255, thank goodness! But I was sneaking up on 235 when Carol got me going to MRT at RTG Training and Performance. Even though craft beer and fine wine may have prevented more weight loss, I am confident that my weight loss is permanent, because it is occurring slowly (about a pound a week).
