Today, I am 18,000 days old. Three months ago, I began my 50th year. I can remember being in college like it was just a few months ago, yet some events seem like a different lifetime. What happened after college? Upon recollection, plenty happened. But I was drifting from scene to scene in my story with out paying attention. And without realizing that I am the director of the movie, I feel like I was living in fast-forward in the VCR. (Yeah, I said VCR. How about LPs, 8-Tracks, Atari, and Sony Walkman? Remember all those?)
About 4 or 5 years ago, I read the book 20,000 Days and Counting by Robert Smith. Since then, I count my life by days. Some people think it’s weird, but I’m done sleepwalking through life.
Counting days has helped me realize how valuable each day can be. And if we make it to 90 years old, we will have lived 32,850 days. That’s it! When I first started learning about this, the number seemed lower than I thought it would. And then I realized I had fewer days remaining than I had lived! YIKES! Times to start living and appreciating each and every day.
Every day is a blessing. Once it has passed, it’s gone forever. This means time is more valuable than money. I can make more money; I can’t make more time.
While we can’t make more days, we can take care of ourselves and make the most of the days we have.
